Who Are YOU Online?

A LOT of Rotary clubs want to increase their online presence HOWEVER I urge you FIRST to consider WHO ARE YOU ONLINE?  It is a similar discussion to increasing membership.  There are two things to consider, 1. What environment are you projecting to prospective members? and 2. What are you doing to engage current members?  So lets take a minute to look at some examples of these two to get you to ponder what image you are projecting online...  REMEMBER READ CAREFULLY UNDER FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM REGARDING INCREASING YOUR FOLLOWING AND UNDERSTANDING DEMOGRAPHICS!!!

What Are You Projecting

OK, lets say I just took your past nine postings on Facebook, Twitter, etc. and copied the postings to the boxes below:

What does this say about who you are?  Looks like a fun group.  Nice Photos.  What if I am new to town and I have heard about Rotary and don't know anything about it and I saw these as your Facebook feed?  Would I be inspired by your club?  Would I follow your feed? Would I feel that this is a closed group?  Would I feel excited to meet the club? I am guessing that even your own members might respond as follows:

Look, we all have limited time, don't waste the time you have possibly reaching the 1.6 billion people on Facebook by doing things that will clearly reduce your impact.  MIX IT UP!  ADD Video, add stories of service, add positive messages ~ you WILL get more attention posting humor, inspiration, news of the offbeat (like the squirrel that defended a man's house from a robbery) mixed into the nine photos of the same thing every time that I posted above.  MIX IT UP!!!  You want people to be excited to read your postings.  The more people like your brand, the more impact you will have when you create a call to action or have an event.  NOW rethink WHO ARE YOU ONLINE??????

ONE FINAL NOTE: ROTARY IS A NON POLITICAL ORGANIZATION WITH OPEN ACCEPTANCE OF ALL RELIGIONS.  THAT MEANS WE HAVE NO BUSINESS USING OUR ROTARY SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS TO SUPPORT ANY POLITICAL OR RELIGIOUS GROUP.  REMEMBER WE WORK GLOBALLY AND OUR GOAL IS TO ALWAYS BE ABLE TO OPEN OUR ARMS TO SERVE THE GLOBE.  PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO ISOLATE YOUR MEMBERS, YOUR PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS OR THE PEOPLE THAT WE SERVE!!!
