Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called "tweets".  Twitter is a global platform for public self-expression and conversation in real time. It is a real-time platform, where any user can create a Tweet and any user can follow other users. Viewers can see photos, videos and conversations directly in Tweets to get the whole story at a glance, and all in one place.  Users access Twitter through the website interface, SMS (short messaging service), or mobile device app. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with more than 100 million users who in 2012 posted 340 million tweets per day.  The service also handled 1.6 billion search queries per day.  In 2013 Twitter was one of the ten most-visited websites, and has been described as "the SMS of the Internet." As of December 2016, Twitter has more than 317 million ACTIVE users. Click HERE for a link to the Rotary International Twitter feed.  Click HERE for the cool dog Twitter set up instructions.

Impact ~ Twitter was the means of communicating information during political uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia.  Alongside Facebook, every website you visit has a Twitter icon.  To quote the online magazine Tech Crunch discussing Twitter's Social Impact:

"When you want to search for something online, you “Google It.”

When you want to connect with friends, or someone that you just met, you “friend them on Facebook.”

When you want to share your random thoughts with the world, you “tweet it.”
